We need your support to maintain and promote the heritage of Our Beautiful Village. The little hamlet of McGregor lies well off the beaten track, in the Boland region of the Western Cape, and was once described as being 'the best preserved example of a 19th century town in the Cape'. Unfortunately the march of time has, to a small degree, taken its toll.
Therefore it is the aim of the McGregor Heritage Society to preserve, where possible, what is left of some of the original village buildings. We are also endeavouring to encourage those people who build new dwellings to do so in a style which is in harmony with the character of McGregor.
For visitors wanting to escape the city rat-race, McGregor has a healthy Klein Karoo climate - hot and dry in summer, and colder and wetter in winter - and it is the ideal place to stay when exploring the Breede River valley.
Unpolluted country air offers the opportunity to relish a sight forgotten by the city dweller - a sky filled with glittering stars.
There is a certain mystical charm to the village and this is heightened by the reputed concentration of ley lines, whose existence attracts natural therapists, thinkers and creative people from afar.
The Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve is situated 5km from McGregor and is maintained by the Department of Nature Conservation. The Reserve boasts of two major hiking trails as well as two bird hides and numerous species of flora and fauna.
The Krans Nature Reserve, maintained by the Heritage Society, is situated on the North Western boundary of the village and offers several pleasant, easy walks among copious indigenous flowers and renosterbos, and offers excellent views of the village and its surrounds.
McGregor is a unique village and unless we, as caring citizens, make a conscious effort to preserve this uniqueness it will suffer the fate of so many other communities and become just another small town in the Western Cape.
You can play a part by joining the Heritage Society and assisting in:
- creating awareness of the beauty and history of McGregor and its people
- helping, wherever possible, with the restoration of old buildings
- promoting the architectural design of new buildings which will be in harmony with McGregor's character
- developing and maintaining the Krans Reserve for recreational and educational purposes
- encouraging conservation among the residents and visitors to McGregor
