Rated by Drive Out as one of the Top Ten 4 x 4 trails, Groot Toren is 11km from
McGregor on the road to Bonnievale and Stormsvlei (R317).
This 24 km circular rock, sand and mud (in winter) route in the Rviersonderend mountains
takes 3 to 4 hours. It is exhilarating and challenging for the experienced driver, and for the not-so-experienced there is always an escape route. The trail winds through acres of enchanting Protea and Fynbos species with breathtaking views at every turn, until you reach Goudgat, 1000m above sea level, the official snow borderline of the Groot Toren area. Take the opportunity of spotting small game: klipbok, duikers, grysbok, dassies and Black Eagles.
