We are currently the only Waldorf School in South Africa that has a hostel up to Class 12.
We have two hostels, one for the class 8-10 students (14 students maximum) and the other for the 11-12 students (12 students maximum). The one hostel, located on the High School premises, houses the oldest students and has as hostel parents Matthew and Felicity while the other hostel is on the Primary School Premises and has Rein, the science teacher as their hostel parent.
Since there is not much activity in McGregor itself the students need to fill their time with own initiatives which include visiting, listening to music, braiding hair, etc. Just recently some of the hostel students started a choir and drama group which will practice to perform in and outside the village.
Most hostel students choose our school because it is a rural school, it has small classes and personal attention and it offers very practical and academic education.
The costs of a hostel, due to supervision, food, water and electricity, and accommodation, are very high. Most of our students cannot go home for weekends and this increases the costs substantially. It currently costs R 2500 per month to house a student (about R 80 per day). Many of the students cannot afford this and have to depend on sponsors to help pay these fees. Due to the fact that 85% of our students in the school do not pay full school fees, and are dependent on sponsorship, a decision was taken not to increase the financial burden of the school by allowing students into the hostel unless they can pay the fees or are fully sponsored.
