It is our intention to have one teacher per class, although this pushes the running expenses of the school up. Given that a majority of our children come from a disadvantaged background, quite a few of them need extra support and attention. The abilities within a class also vastly differ. On top of learning difficulties most children do not have English as their first language.
At this point in time the ratio is an average of 12 children per teacher with class 3 and 4 still combined. The College of Teachers is seeking the salary of an extra teacher so the class 3-4 can be split.

THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT
There are very few English first language speakers. The first language of most of our children is either Afrikaans or Xhosa. The use of spoken and written English is reasonable to very poor. Reading English is often behind.
The children who join the primary school later rather than early often do not have a good foundation for maths – lacking an understanding of the basic, essential concepts.
This answers for a lot of the learning difficulties in the subjects of READING, WRITING AND ARITHMATIC and the incidence of Dyslexia.
Of those children can be helped during primary school years then in there are less such challenges in high school.
The children suffering the effects of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome have learning difficulties due to lack of impulse control, lack of concentration and lack of emotional and social maturity.
A third group of children encounters learning difficulties due to the poor socio-economic circumstances and environmental influences they grow up in.
The Primary School is seeking the salary to pay a Remedial teacher - a person who can assist those children who are challenged in reading, writing and arithmetic and those who are dyslexic.
COST : R100 000 / year
In order to gain deeper insight into certain children they would appreciate the visit of an Anthroposophical doctor once a term for two days. He or she could assess the children and talk to the teacher and parent on how to help the child best in a natural way.
COST : R1 000 / term – R4 000 / year
