Zolani is a big Black African township near by Ashton, Western Cape. There is no offer of English medium education in that area.
25 % of our Primary school children are at present bussed in from Zolani every day, a journey of about 45 minutes each way. This is, especially for the younger children, a long journey. It pushes up the running costs of the school because although the parents are required to pay bus fees, they only cover 50 % of the costs of running the bus.
There is an obvious need of parents to have English medium Waldorf Education in Zolani something the Breede River municipality is supporting as they regard it as an initiative which will broaden the multi cultural base in the area.
The school is supporting the initiative of Gloria Bukwana, a government crèche teacher, whose daughter is in our Primary School and who is currently in her second year of the Waldorf Educare training with the Centre for Creative Education in Cape Town. She intends to start a local Waldorf Educare Centre beginning of 2008. This will create spaces on the bus for the children wanting to come to the Primary School.
Together with a core group of interested parents, she is investigating an appropriate building or land facilities (a container as class room). The school envisions that a local Waldorf Primary School can grow out of this initiative.
To start this project Gloria is looking for help to acquire:
